Dorel Juvenile Group has recalled 100,000 stair gates due to risk of falls.

A product meant to keep children safe now poses a threat to children, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus, Ind., recalled 100,000 of its Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates this week. The hinges on the gates pose a falling risk if they are installed at the top of stairs.

About the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate

The recalled gates are made of white metal with a gray handle. They feature a motion-activated nightlight that glows when a person comes within 10 feet of the gate. The light then shuts off automatically after 90 seconds. The gates attach to a stair banister and open and close manually with self-locking handle.

Reason for Safety Gate Recall

The gate is designed to be placed at the top of stairs to keep children from falling down the stairs. The hinges that hold the Safety 1st Stair Gate in place can break, causing a risk of falling if the gate is placed at the top of the stairs.

Where Recalled Gates were Sold

The Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates were manufactured in China and sold at juvenile product stores nationwide, including Babies R Us and Wal-mart, from January 2005 to December 2007, for about $60.

Safety Gate Product Information

The recall involves gates manufactured before Dec. 31, 2007 with the model number 42111. The model number can be found on a sticker located under the handle panel. The manufacture date can be found below the gate’s handle on a date wheel. An arrow points to the month of manufacture, and the year is stamped inside the circle. The date can also be found on a sticker inside the battery door.

What Consumers Should Do About the Recall

Consumers should not return the safety gates to retail stores. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising consumers to stop using the gates and contact Dorel Juvenile Group for a free repair kit. There are four ways to contact the company:

Sometimes even safety products can be unsafe. It’s important for parents to be aware of product recalls and visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission Web site regularly to check for new products that have been recalled.

This is why people need to make sure their stair gates are JPMA certified and also made of good quality. The above stair gates were JPMA certified and still failed.
